There is no substitute for a well made prototype. Prototypes communicate qualities that are impossible to demonstrate with drawings or CAD models. There are several ways to prototype a product. These range from simple non-functional mockups to more complex facsimile prototypes that function like a production product. Before entering into any prototyping effort an evaluation of the purpose and value of a prototype should be considered. Another important factor to consider is the audience for your prototype. If your goal is to demonstrate a technical feature to a technical group then the protoype may not need to be stylized. In contrast, if you are demonstrating the product to end users you may need the protoype to appear as if it is a production product.
